INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (May 8, 2017) – Lubbock Christian University clinched a berth to the 2017 NCAA Division II softball postseason field Saturday by winning the Heartland Conference Tournament in San Antonio, Texas. Monday, pairings were announced for the NCAA Division II South Central Region Tounament and LCU was issued the No.8-seed and will open play Thursday at 6 p.m. in San Angelo, Texas facing top-seeded Angelo State, who serves as one of two hosts in a pair of four-team brackets in the region.
For the second year in a row (only two seasons postseason eligible), the Lady Chaps are one of the last 64 teams punching their ticket to NCAA postseason play. LCU (39-17) clinched a berth Saturday by winning the Heartland Conference Tournament. They defeated St. Mary's twice to claim the title for a second season in a row. Colorado Mesa (46-1) won the Rocky Mountain Conference Tournament to enter the regional as the four-seed and will face five-seed Cameron (43-18) at 3:30 p.m. to open the San Angelo bracket. The other half of the South Central Regional is hosted by No. 5 West Texas A&M and also features No. 19 St. Mary’s, Texas Women’s and Tarleton State. The winners of each respective double elimination bracket will then advance to the Super Regional.
LCU is a combined 5-11 against this season’s eight team field and 0-4 against teams assigned to San Angelo. All four losses were to No.1 Angelo State, who bolsters a 52-5 record. The Rambelles took an at-large berth after falling to West Texas A&M in the Lone Star Conference Tournament. ASU has dominated the Lady Chaps thus season, outscoring them 30-3 in the combined four games. LCU is 1-5 all-time against ASU.
The Lady Chaps are seeking their first ever NCAA postseason win in San Angelo. LCU is 0-2 all-time in NCAA postseason play. Last season, they went San Antonio and fell to Texas Woman’s and St. Mary’s.
