Akiu collects Preseason All-Big 12 honor

LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech junior libero Reyn Akiu has been named to the 2017 Preseason All-Big 12 Volleyball Team, announced by the league office today.

This marks the first career preseason honor for the Honolulu, Hawaii, native. She is the lone libero/defensive specialist named to the team.

Akiu put together a stellar 2016 campaign, recording the second-highest single-season dig total in program history with 547 on the year. She averaged 4.97 digs per set, which ranked second in the Big 12 and tops among conference returnees in 2017. She posted two 30-dig matches last season, including a career-high 33 against Baylor on Nov. 2. Overall, she had 12 matches with 22 digs or more.

Known for her defensive prowess, she also aided the team's attack finishing second on the team with 86 assists while compiling 18 service aces on the year, which tied for second on the team.

Following her sophomore season, she was recognized with a nod on the All-Big 12 Second Team. This spring, she was one of 37 collegiate players selected to train and compete with the U.S. Collegiate National Team in Minneapolis, Minn.

Akiu and the Red Raiders begin practice for the fall on Tuesday, Aug. 8, in preparation for the 2017 season. Tech will play in the annual Red & Black match on Saturday, Aug. 19, with the season starting on the road at the Barcelona HBU Classic in Houston on Aug. 25-26. The first home match is slated for Monday, Sept. 4 at 6 p.m. against Abilene Christian.
