LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech is set to kick off cross country season in a duel against New Mexico State tomorrow afternoon, beginning at 3 p.m. MST on the Ruidoso Fitness Trail.
The women will start the competition with a 4,500m run, and the men’s team will follow at the conclusion of that event with their 5,200m course.
The route is found behind the U.S. Forest Service Ranger Station, located on the corner of Mechem Drive and Cedar Creek Road.
The Red Raider roster consists of 12 newcomers, four of which are transfers, and 24 returners.
Five prominent seniors are returning for Tech: Hattie Schunk, Jasmine Torres, Clark Blunt, Todd Mickey and Ebenether Wondaferew. All five have experience competing at both the Big 12 Cross Country Championships and NCAA Division I Mountain Region Cross Country Championships. Schunk was also recognized for her achievements in the classroom this past year, as she was named one of the Dr. Gerald Lage Academic Achievement Award recipients.
Also traveling on the women’s side is: Kaylee Amershek, Karyss Betzen, Denae Chapman, Nokuthula Dlamini, Jessica Gallardo, Arianna Lopez, Bret Leigh Nance, Lauren Offerman, Taryn Otto, Rianna Randolph, Kaitlyn Tharp and Lauren Younger.
On the men’s side: Stephen Alvarez, Michael Benoit, Nathan Gift, Riley Gonzales, Caleb Hughes, Grant LaSelle, Matthew Munoz, Luke Phillips and Shea Whatley.
Next week the Red Raiders will host a women’s 5K and men’s 8K race at the Chaparral Ridge Course on Saturday, September 9, starting with the men at 8 a.m.
