Lubbock Christian University carried an eight-match home win streak from last season into Thursday night’s home opener and were unable to extend the streak, as Colorado Mesa defeated the Lady Chaps 3-0 in LCU’s home opener. The match was also the first match of the Chap Classic inside Rip Griffin Center. Colorado Mesa was led by a 11-kill performance Megan Gianinetti, along with a double-double from Samantha Ritter (34 assists, 13 digs) and 27 digs from Taylor Woods. The loss places LCU with a 1-4 record overall and they have dropped their last four matches.
How It Happened
Channing Stewart helped the Lady Chaps tie the set at 15-15 with a kill, but they were unable to take a lead, as the Mavericks scored the next three points off LCU miscues to lead 18-15. LCU’s Lauren Zoller followed a pair of CMU attack errors with a kill to cut the deficit to 23-22, but CMU called a timeout and responded obtaining the final two points to win the set 25-22. Gianinetti tallied five kills in the set for CMU, and she was aided in the set win by a 10-dig performance from Woods in the set. Jaden Kennedy led LCU with a trio of kills in the set.
CMU leaped out to an 8-0 lead to open the second set, with three of the points coming off of kills from Mackenzie Edwards. LCU responded with a 5-1 run to cut the deficit to 9-5. Trailing 23-12, LCU went on a 7-1 run, but it was not enough, as LCU fell in the set 25-19. Woods had another set of 10 digs and Edwards finished the set with five kills.
The final set was tied 5-5 before it turned in full favor of CMU, beginning with a 14-5 run for a 19-9 lead. CMU had a .297 attack percentage in the set and four kills from Gianinetti to claim the set 19-9.
