Texas Tech Men's Tennis gears up for two tournaments this weekend

HOUSTON, Texas/Tulsa, Okla. – The Texas Tech men’s tennis team heads into the heart of its fall schedule with a pair of tournaments this weekend.

Justin Bloss, Jackson Cobb, Pyry Hyrkkönen and Matheus Leite will be in action at the Rice Invitational in Houston. The three-day tournament gets underway on Friday with two singles rounds and one round of doubles.

Leite has posted a 2-2 singles record and made a quarterfinal singles run during his fall debut at the Midland Invitational, while Cobb and Leite also tacked on a pair of doubles victories at the event.

“We’ve had a couple more weeks of practice with these guys, and they’ve been able to get a tournament or two this fall,” Texas Tech head coach Brett Masi said. “We want to start to see the changes we’ve made on the court and the progress made with our games. I really want these four guys to compete hard throughout the event and get some solid matches under their belts.”

Connor Curry, Artem Kapshuk, Tommy Mylnikov and Alex Sendegeya hit the court at the Saint Francis System ITA All-American Championships hosted by the University of Tulsa. Kapshuk and Mylnikov start prequalifying singles on Saturday followed by Curry and Sendegeya in qualifying singles on Monday.

Curry checks in at No. 98 in the ITA singles rankings and is coming off three consecutive victories en route to the consolation championship at the John Breaux Classic. He also teamed with Kapshuk, and the duo earned a runner-up finish at last week’s tournament.

“The ITA’s are where the best players in the country will be over the next week and a half,” Masi said. “This tournament will really test our level and see where we stand in comparison to the rest of the country. I’m excited to watch out guys get after it in Tulsa.”

Texas Tech will play in its fifth and sixth fall events at the UTSA Cup on Oct. 13-15 in San Antonio before heading to the ITA Texas Regionals on Oct. 19-23 hosted by Texas A&M.
