Texas Tech Track and Field releases 2018 slate

LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech track & field is set to participate in a total of 20 meets this season, nine of which taking place on home turf.

The Red Raiders will be staying home for a majority of the indoor season to revel in the new state-of-the-art Sports Performance Center, set to open in the next few weeks. Tech will host a total of nine meets throughout the months of January, February, and March, two of which being a high school meet and the NJCAA Championships meet.

“We walk by the SPC every single day and get to see the progress, so we’re just eager to finally be able to get inside and get to work,” said Head coach Wes Kittley. “2018 is going to be a great season and we’re ready to get going.”

The first competition at the Sports Performance Center has been named the Corky Classic, after former head track & field coach Corky Oglesby, a Texas Tech legend and all around favorite. This year’s Corky Classic will host Baylor, LSU, Oklahoma State and Texas on Saturday, January 13.

Oglesby, a lifelong Red Raider through and through, was diagnosed with pancreatic in July, but is determined to see his way to the first home meet.

“It’s just an honor that they named his meet after me and I sure hope to be there to see it, “said Oglesby.  “It is going to be full of some of the best teams in the country and I’m looking forward to it.”

Following the Corky Classic on the collegiate indoor meet slate in the SPC is the Red Raider Invitational, Red and Black Open, Texas Tech Invitational, Texas Tech Open, Texas Tech Shootout and Matador Qualifier meet.

Iowa State and Texas A&M will again be hosting the Big 12 Indoor Championship and NCAA Indoor Championships on February 23-24 and March 9-10.

Texas Tech will open outdoor competition in San Antonio, Texas, at the UTSA Invitational on March 17-18.

There will be two meets at the Terry & Linda Fuller Track & Field Athletic Complex, held on Friday April 27 and Saturday, May 5.

The season will wrap up with the Big 12 Championship in Waco, Texas, on May 10-13 followed by the NCAA West Regional in Sacramento, California, on May 24-26 and the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon, on June 6-10.

The schedule is tentative and subject to change.
