SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Texas Tech men's tennis team picked up five wins on Friday to open the UTSA Fall Cup in San Antonio.
Matheus Leite led the way with an undefeated day. He secured a 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-6) victory over UTSA's Joao Ceolin in singles before he partnered with Pyry Hyrkkönen for two doubles wins. The Brazilian has secured a team-leading six doubles wins this fall.
Justin Bloss registered a 7-5, 6-1 triumph over Igor Cantahede of UTSA in singles. He teamed with Jackson Cobb for a 6-4 doubles victory over St. Mary's Brendon Brown and Felix Holloway.
"One thing we've been working at with these guys is starting fast right out of the gate," Texas Tech assistant coach Daniel Whitehead said. "I feel like we could have done a better job at that today, but we overcame a slow start and finished the day strong as a team. We were able to play together at the same time so it felt more like a spring dual match. I felt the guys competed well together and did a great job of supporting each other."
Texas Tech will face St. Mary's in singles before the Red Raiders finish the day with a singles and doubles matchup against UTA on Saturday.
