Kickoff: 8:00 p.m. 100.7 The Score
Lubbock-Cooper Pirates (5-3, 1-2)
Monterey Plainsmen (4-4, 2-1)
The Lubbock-Cooper football team has lost back to back games for the first time since 2014. Last week the Pirates fell to the 11th ranked team in 5A, the Coronado Mustangs 51-22. LCP has just played the two most talented teams in the region. Lubbock-Cooper will look to get back to their winning ways this week versus the Monterey Plainsmen this Friday night at 8 pm from Lowery Field. The Pirates need at least a win in the last two weeks of the season to guarantee a playoff spot in 4-5A. Lubbock-Cooper does hold the head to head tiebreaker over Lubbock High, LCP plays Monterey then San Angelo Lakeview, while the Westerners play Coronado and then Monterey in the final week of the season. Last season Monterey won the game 35-30 at Pirate Stadium. This Friday will be the second meeting all-time between the two programs.
Monterey Plainsmen: The Plainsmen lead by Wayne Hutchinson has to feel like they are in a pretty good spot knowing they control their own destiny. With playoff seeding about wrapped up, Monterey will need to win out with an Abilene Cooper win over Coronado to claim a share of the district championship. Monterey has had an up and down season with a very difficult non-district schedule. MHS is currently 4-4 on the year with a 2-1 district 4-5A record with the only district loss coming to the Coronado Mustangs. Monterey started the season with an unbelievable loss to Odessa High on a last second snap over the punter to drop to 0-1. The Plainsmen then fell to Abilene Wylie, who played for a state championship last year and a then unbeaten Midland Lee team on a Thursday night. Coach Hutch’s team won two road games in non-district versus Canyon Randall and Stephenville. Maybe even more impressive, Monterey upset Abilene Cooper at home 51-44 to start district 4-5A play. Abilene Cooper shared the district title last season and was rolling in the non-district with a 4-1 record. Wayne Hutchinson, who guided the Plainsmen to a 3 round playoff run a year ago has Brylon Lawson-Young back at quarterback this season and is having another good season. Monterey has a young running back in Lacey and on the defensive side they have moved several players from the offensive side to help out the numbers.
