Lubbock Economic Council celebrates 50 years

Posted: Updated:

The Lubbock Economic Council observed 50 years as an organization.

The ceremony's special guest was John T. Montford, Texas Tech's first chancellor, former Lubbock state senator, and district attorney. He believes the key to keep West Texas thriving is to take care of the agricultural industry.

"The important thing to remember about West Texas is its resilience," Montford said. "Another thing is what I would call the extreme reliance on the viability of the Ogallala aquifers and everything that needs to be done and is being done to preserve it. Because, really, it's the life blood for the High Plains in terms of agriculture production."

Established in 1967, LEC's mission is to promote a better understanding of economic matters.
