17 Texas Tech football players earn Academic All-Big 12 honors

LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech football program recorded its most Academic All-Big 12 selections since 2008 Thursday as 17 different Red Raiders were recognized as part of the announcement by the conference office.

The Red Raiders placed nine student-athletes on the first team and then eight more on the second team to finish one selection shy of its total from 2008 and three shy of the single-season school record set in 2000.

Senior wide receiver Cameron Batson led the way for the Red Raiders as he was recognized on the first team for the third time in his distinguished career. He was joined on the first team by fellow seniors Zach Austin, Talor Nunez and Caleb Woodward.

Michael Barden, meanwhile, was named to the first team for a second-consecutive year, while four other Red Raiders – Matthew Anunda, Travis Bruffy, Bailey Smith and Jax Welch – were all honored for the first time in their respective careers.

Eight other Red Raiders were rewarded with second-team recognition, namely seniors Dylan Cantrell, Tony Morales, Nic Shimonek and Derrick Willies. The group was joined by first-time honorees Zach Adams, John DeLaGarza, Eli Howard and Jack Reichel.

To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or over the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team’s scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence.

Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible. First-team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, while second-team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.

Of the student-athletes honored, eight will play their final game in Jones AT&T Stadium this Saturday when the Red Raiders host TCU. Tech will honor its 16-member senior class prior to its 11 a.m. kickoff against the Horned Frogs.

Tickets are still available for Saturday’s game for as low as $45 per person through a promotion with Racer Classic Car Wash. Fans can purchase tickets online by using the promo code “TTURACER17” or by contacting the Tech Ticket Office at 806-742-TECH during normal business hours (8:30-5 p.m. Monday-Friday).
