LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech baseball team will begin the 2018 season as a unanimous top-five team, which starts on Friday, Feb. 16, at 2 p.m., against Maine at Rip Griffin Park.
It is the first time in program history the Red Raiders have received top-five preseason rankings from all six publications. Each of the six outlets slotted Tech at its highest preseason mark, matching the best from Baseball America.
Tech is ranked No. 3 by three different outlets, the highest preseason ranking ever by a Red Raider squad. It passes No. 5 as the top mark awarded by Baseball America in 2015, when Tech was coming off its first trip to the College World Series.
The Red Raiders are slotted at third by D1 Baseball, the USA Today Coaches poll, and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA). It’s the highest Tech has ever been ranked in the D1 Baseball & NCBWA polls, both coming during the 2017 season.
Perfect Game placed Tech at No. 4 in their preseason poll. Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball Newspaper round out the top-five rankings by slotting the Red Raiders at No. 5 in their respective preseason releases.
The Red Raiders return to action on Friday, Feb. 16, with a four-game series against Maine at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park. Tech returns 22 letterwinners from the 2017 Big 12 champion squad, while welcoming in 13 newcomers to complete this year’s team.
