COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas Tech softball opened the season with a doubleheader split on Day 1 of the Aggie Classic. The Red Raiders (1-1) rallied for a thrilling 4-2 win over Boston College in nine innings, before falling to Houston, 4-1.

Redshirt freshman Michaela Cochran sent the opener to extra innings with a two-run double in the top of the seventh that evened the score at 2-2. Freshman Kelcy Leach hit a go-ahead home run in the top of the ninth, a two-run blast to left field, that would end up sending the Red Raiders to victory.

Senior Cheyene Powell, sophomore Kassidy Scott and freshman Erin Edmoundson each tossed three innings in a solid combined effort. Scott was credited with her 11th career win. The staff as a whole surrendered just three hits and one earned run against the Eagles (0-1) while striking out a pair.

Cochran, who redshirted in 2017 due to a knee injury, shined in her Red Raider debut, finishing 4-4 with two doubles, 2 RBI and a walk. The Ennis, Texas, native was one of two Red Raiders to record a hit in both of Friday's games along with junior Jessica Hartwell, who finished 2-6 with two base on balls and a run scored.

"Michaela had an incredible fall and a really great preseason," head coach Adrian Gregory said. "We've been excited for her to come back off of injury. She puts pressure on defenses and makes things happen. We're excited for her to have a really good day, and we're expecting big things from her."

In the afternoon tilt, Houston (1-0) used a three-run fourth inning to build a 4-0 lead. The Cougars found their way to four singles in the frame, while two Tech errors aided Houston's cause.

Junior Kiana Workman went 2-3 against the Cougars with a pair of singles up the middle. Edmoundson and fellow freshman Breanna Russell also made an impact at the plate as Edmoundson recorded her first career hit while Russell tallied her first career RBI.

Sophomore Hannah Broseman posted three strong innings in relief, striking out three while giving up just two hits. Scott made the start and was tacked with the loss despite just one earned run in four innings.

QUOTES FROM GREGORY
Overall thoughts…
"We're young, so we're going to go through some learning curves, but what I saw today was the beginning of the journey. As soon as they start to understand how good they really are, and start playing like that more and more we will be right where we expect to be. We had a good day today. You can't say great because you're not walking out of here with two wins, but I really like this team."

On pitching….
"We're going to pitch by committee. We're going to have to piece it together. We didn't help Kassidy in the Houston game, but I think they did a really good job of keeping us in the ballgames."
