The Pirates (7-4-1) have had a nice start to the 2018 season as they have already played in two tournaments and have split two games to good 6A schools in Frenship (L 6-4) and Midland High (W 6-3). Lubbock-Cooper was scheduled to play in the Rock Hardball Classic on February 22nd-24th, but that tournament was canceled in Round Rock due to weather. That left LCP and other area schools to scramble and set up an impromptu tournament here in Lubbock. During those 3 days the Pirates picked up wins over Canyon, Little Elm, and Abilene High while falling to Midland Lee a drawing a tie against Flower Mound. The next weekend to begin the month of March, Lubbock-Cooper played in the Tournament of Champions in Midland, Texas going 3-2 throughout the 3 days.

The Pirate offense comes into district play hitting .328 as a team, with Jarred Gibson leading the way with a .457 average with 16 hits, 11 RBI, and 1 home run. Tommy D’Alise, who has the other home run hit by LCP also leads the team with 12 RBI, while Cole Lewis has collected 2 triples and 7 base on balls this season. Bryson Stevens and Benton Ford top the runs scored category with 11 and 9 respectively.

Lubbock-Cooper pitching was the story in the offseason as three pitchers signed D1 offers to play baseball at the next level. Trey Garlett who has signed to play at Texas Tech is 2-0 in 3 starts this year giving up only 6 hits, 2 earned runs, and has struck out a team high 22 batters. The other Red Raider signee, Connor Denham has thrown 10.2 innings with 11 strike outs and has an ERA of 1.96 in 2 appearances on the mound. Zac Rubio has recorded the only save for LCP in the young season as the sophomore has tossed 7.1 innings with 7 strikeouts.

Lubbock-Cooper made their first appearance in the 5A Top 25 rankings according to for the week of March 5th. The Pirates came in ranked at number 23. The only other West Texas area team to make the 5A ranking is Amarillo High who checked in at number 11 after falling from their preseason number one ranking.

Monterey comes into the game with a 5-5 record only playing in two tournaments so far this season. The Plainsmen also took part in the impromptu scramble that was played in Lubbock and then they went to Grand Prairie for another tournament. Kent Meador returns for his 9th season as head coach of the Plainsmen. Meador is 135-96 as the leader of Monterey.

Monterey plays at Moegle Field, named after the legendary coach Bobby Moegle who won 4 state championship (1972, 1974, 1981, 1996) as the head coach of the Plainsmen. When Moegle retired in 1999, he was the winningest high school baseball coach in the nation with 1,115 wins and 267 losses, winning 33 district championships in 39 seasons. In 2013, Moegle was the first high school baseball coach inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame, a place where all-time football greats like Sammy Baugh, Earl Campbell and Bob Lilly reside.
