Lubbock, Texas – The No. 24 Lubbock-Cooper baseball team will look for its first district win Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. as they welcome Lubbock High for their district home opener at Pirate Field at First United Park.
The game will air on 100.7 FM The Score in Lubbock. Andres Flores will have the radio call. The Pirates (12-5-1, 0-1) fell in the district opener last Tuesday to Monterey losing 9-8 in the bottom of the seventh inning off a walk-off sacrifice fly to center field. Lubbock-Cooper took a break from district play over the weekend as the Pirates competed in the Lubbock Tournament hosting five games in three days at Pirate Field at First United Park.
Lubbock-Cooper went a perfect 5-0 throughout the weekend. Thursday, the Pirates defeated Waco Midway 5-1, then that evening held off El Paso Montwood 10-8. On Friday, LCP beat Odessa Permian 15-8 despite giving up a 5-run inning early on, then closed the day topping El Paso Coronado 5-3. To close out the Classic on Saturday, the Pirates took a game from old district rival Plainview 11-10 after regaining the lead in the sixth inning.
The Pirates swept the season series from Lubbock High last year. Lubbock-Cooper beat the Westerners 4-2 in the first meeting at Westerner Field, 19-1 in the second match up, and 5-4 in the final game of the season series.
Lubbock-Cooper dropped one spot in the newly released 5A Top 25 rankings according to www.txhighschoolbaseball.com. The Pirates checked in ranked number 24 for the week of March 12th. The only other West Texas area team to make the 5A rankings was Amarillo High who dropped 2 spots to number 13. The Sandies started the year ranked number one in the preseason poll.
Lubbock High (6-11-1, 0-1) comes into Tuesday’s contest losers of their district opener last week falling on the road to Coronado 7-3. The Westerners played last weekend in the Lubbock Tournament as well going 2-3 over the three days. LHS played tournaments in El Paso and Midland as well as dropping two non-district games to Midland High and Odessa High. Lubbock High is led by Steve Ribera who is in his 6th season as head coach, Ribera has guided the Westerners to the playoffs 4 out of the last 5 years including a Regional Quarterfinal trip in 2014 when LHS was part of the old 4A classification. Prior to Ribera taking over the baseball program in 2013, Lubbock High only made the playoffs twice since 2003.
Lubbock-Cooper will take a true road trip for the first time in district play traveling to Abilene to play the Cooper Cougars Friday at 5:00 p.m. The next baseball radio broadcast will be March 23rd vs San Angelo Lake View at 7:00 p.m. on 100.7 The Score.
