DENTON, Texas – Texas Tech soccer continued its spring slate with a 2-1 victory over Oklahoma State on Saturday at Mean Green Soccer Stadium in Denton.
The win improved the Red Raiders to 4-0 over the spring schedule, as Tech has also picked up victories over New Mexico (4-1), West Texas A&M (2-0) and Abilene Christian (4-0).
"We always enjoy getting to Dallas to play in front of so many of our families & fans, and we had a great turnout for a spring game," head coach Tom Stone said. "We played well in the first half, scoring two nice goals and we were particularly sharp moving the ball and looking for opportunities to get forward."
Tech put up two goals in the first half thanks to sophomore forward Ally Griffin and senior defender Brooke Denesik. A combo play between early enrollees Jayne Lydiatt & Mackenzie Coons sprung Denesik, who sent a cross to Griffin at the near post for the redirection and a 1-0 lead.
Later in the frame, Denesik buried a restart into the back of the net after a foul at the top of the OSU box for the two-goal advantage. Sophomore goalkeeper Marissa Zuchetto kept the Cowgirls off the board with a clean first half with two saves.
OSU would get one back in the second half, but a strong performance by the Tech defense helped the Red Raiders pick up their fourth win of the spring.
"We still have a lot left to work on this spring, but it was good to see some of our younger players respond favorably to playing such a quality team like OSU," Stone said. "We are excited to have two more good games ahead to close out the spring."
The Red Raiders head down to Houston to square with Rice on April 7 at 2 p.m., then wrap the spring slate against LSU in Bossier City on April 14 at 3:30 p.m.
The Red Raiders put together a 9-7-3 record during the 2017 fall season, missing postseason play for the first time in six years. Tech will return the bulk of its core, graduating four seniors, while adding three mid-year enrollees and eight on National Signing Day to get ready for an exciting 2018 campaign.
