LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech softball opened up the second half of its Big 12 schedule with a 5-2 loss at Texas on Friday night in the series opener at McCombs Field.
The Red Raiders (21-20, 1-9) fell behind 4-0 after one before cutting the Longhorn lead in half in the third inning on a two-run double from redshirt sophomore Karli Hamilton. Texas pitcher Brooke Bolinger (10-5), however, settled in from there to close out the complete game with eight strikeouts, five hits allowed and four walks.
The Longhorns (24-15, 7-0) struck first with a pair of two-out, two-run doubles that chased Tech starter Kassidy Scott (6-7). With the bases loaded and two away, sophomore Kaitlyn Williams hit a double down the line in right to score the first two runs, and fellow sophomore Malory Schattle mirrored her with a double down the leftfield line to bring in two more and make it a 4-0 game.
Freshman Erin Edmoundson entered to close out the first and went on to throw 5.1 innings while giving up one run on four hits with two strikeouts and a walk. The Clear Lake, Texas, native got strong support from a defense that committed just one mistake on the night.
"I thought Erin came in and was clutch on the mound," head coach Adrian Gregory said. "Our defense squared up and played good defense from then on. You have to love the fight in what we give every single day."
Hamilton was one of five Red Raiders to record hits in the contest, finishing 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Redshirt freshman Michaela Cochran had a bunt single in the first and ended up scoring a run in the third. Redshirt freshman Heaven Burton, freshman Breanna Russell and senior Allison Knopp also recorded hits in the contes.t
Reigning FastPitch News National Player of the Week Jessica Hartwell was walked in all four plate appearances, setting a new career high. The junior came around to score on the double from Hamilton in the third.
The Red Raiders will look to bounce back in game two of the series on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Longhorn Network.
