LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 4 Texas Tech baseball team slipped in game three to No. 14 Oklahoma, 12-5, on Sunday afternoon at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.
The Red Raiders (32-9, 10-5) claimed the series over OU (27-15, 10-5) after picking up 5-4 (10) and 12-6 wins in the first two games of the set. It was the third-straight home series Tech had won over Oklahoma and first loss to the club in Lubbock since 2012. Sunday's decision was only the second loss at home for the Red Raiders this season, as Tech holds a 21-2 record at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park in 2018.
Junior catcher Zayne Willems and sophomore infielder Josh Jung each posted multi-hit bids, both recording extra base hits in an RBI double from Willems and a two-RBI triple from Jung. Tech totaled nine hits, with seven starters recording at least one knock.
Sophomore right-handed pitcher John McMillon got the start on Sunday and tossed 5.0 innings against OU. Despite a rocky first inning that featured three runs on three hits & two walks, McMillon gave Tech his seventh outing with 5.0 or more frames worked in 10 starts. His final line went: 5.0 IP, seven hits, three runs, three walks and five strikeouts.
Oklahoma struck first in the opening frame, plating three for an early 3-0 lead. With the bases loaded, Lindsly hit a two-RBI single through the right side of the infield for the first runs of the game. His hit put runners on the corners, allowing a sacrifice fly from Ware to deep left field to score another run.
The Red Raiders got one back in the bottom of the second thanks to a leadoff solo homer from sophomore Grant Little, his ninth of the year, to make it a 3-1 game.
In the seventh, OU added four to push the lead to 7-1. With runners on the corners & nobody out, a wild pitch scored Harris from 3rd to make it 4-1. A book-rule double from Murray with one out plated Oklahoma's second run of the frame, while a single from Ware brought in another and a bases-loaded walk combined to make it 7-1. A two-run homer in the eighth from Walker pushed the score to 9-1.
Back-to-back doubles from junior Cody Farhat & Willems to open the eighth made it 9-2. With one out & two on, Jung roped a bases-clearing triple to right-center field to tack on two more for a 9-4 deficit. After a pitching change & two away in the frame, senior Zach Rheams shot an RBI single to right field to cut the score to 9-5.
However, OU tacked on three more in the top of the ninth to bring the score to its final at 12-5.
The Red Raiders embark on a five-game road trip, beginning a two-game set with No. 3 Arkansas on Tuesday, April 24, at 6:30 p.m. on SECN+ from Baum Stadium in Fayetteville.
