NEW ORLEANS, La. – Three Texas Tech Track & Field coaches earned U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) regional awards following the outdoor season.
Head Coach Wes Kittley was named the Mountain Region Men's Coach of the Year, marking the fourth time he has won the award. Kittley won the same award during the indoor season earlier this year. This is also the first time Kittley has won the award during the outdoor season.
Kittley's win is attributed to several notable accomplishments notched during the 2018 outdoor slate. Entering the NCAA Outdoor Championships, the Red Raiders men's program held onto a No. 2 ranking for most of the season. After capturing the program's first-ever Big 12 Indoor Championship title, the Red Raiders won the Big 12 Outdoor Championship title with a record-setting 165 points.
Calvin Robinson earned the Mountain Region Men's Assistant Coach of the Year, his third award in three years. Under the guidance of Robinson, the men's sprint and hurdles squad had an outstanding outdoor season. The 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay school records fell this season. His sprint group scored 70 points leading the men's program to the Big 12 Outdoor title, while four athletes captured individual Big 12 titles and the 4x100m relay Big 12 Championship.
Associate Head Coach James Thomas was named the Mountain Region Women's Assistant Coach of the Year, marking his third women's region award and seventh overall. Three of Thomas' athletes won Big 12 individual championships and led the team with 53 of the 92 points scored. Three women's athletes qualified for the NCAA Final Site under Thomas' leadership.
A travel squad of 19 student-athletes will head to Eugene, Ore., next week for the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
