LUBBOCK, Texas – The 2018 football season officially kicked off Friday afternoon as Texas Tech hosted its first of 25 preseason workouts on the practice fields at the Football Training Facility.
"I think the first day you are just always excited to be out there," head coach Kliff Kingsbury said. "Guys are excited to be back playing football and they moved around well. We have a bunch of guys that have some experience and know how we practice, so I thought it well fairly smooth for day one."
The Red Raiders started the first part of practice inside the Petersen Family Indoor Practice Facility before making their way outside. It was the first practice on the new grass and FieldTurf surfaces at the Football Training Facility after the entire complex was renovated this spring.
Tech split its time between individual drills and 11-on-11 action in the first of two days of helmet-only practices. The Red Raiders will transition to shoulder pads Sunday before their first full-pad practice Tuesday afternoon.

The Red Raiders are roughly four weeks from opening the 2018 campaign against Ole Miss in the AdvoCare Texas Kickoff at NRG Stadium in Houston. Kickoff is slated for 11 a.m. with coverage provided nationally on ESPN and the Texas Tech Sports Network.
