LUBBOCK, Texas – This summer was another successful offseason for the Lady Raider Tennis student-athletes. Collectively, the players earned more than 100 Women's Tennis Association (WTA) points, won a professional title, made two finals and four professional semifinals.
Felicity Maltby has been playing in tournaments on the pro circuit all summer. In her first tournament of the summer, she teamed up with Gabriela Talaba to advance to the doubles quarterfinal of the Bethany Beach 25K.
Maltby advanced to the Round of 16 of the Les Contamines-Montjoie 15K after winning two qualifying matches to make the main draw. She then defeated Emmanuelle Girard (France) in the Round of 32. In doubles play, Maltby teamed up with Tiffany William and made the quarterfinals.
Incoming freshman Kennedy Bridgforth advanced to the final match in the singles and doubles brackets of the USTA National L2 Tournament Girls' 18.
Newcomer Denise-Antonela Stoica has played in several 15K events in Europe. Most recently, she advanced to the semifinal round of the Bucharest 15K in her home country of Romania. Stoica ended up falling to Anna Turati of Texas in the semifinals. The Bucharest event is the same event that Gabriela Talaba won last year.
Stoica also made it to the quarterfinals of the Hammamet 15K event in Tunisia.
Newcomers Sydney Jones, Olivia Peet, Nell Miller and Bridgforth competed in several of the Oracle ITA Summer Circuit tournaments in Dallas over the summer.
Peet won five straight to capture the titled at the UT-Arlington event. She faced off with future teammate Miller in the final match. Three of the four semifinalists were Texas Tech signees. Bridgforth advanced to the semfinals while Jones fell in the quarterfinals.
In the doubles bracket, Bridgforth and Reagan Collins captured the title, defeating Miller and her partner Isabella DiLaura. Three of the four semifinal pairs were Texas Tech signees.
During the Summer Circuit hosted by SMU, Miller was selected as the No. 1 seed and won four straight matches to advance to the final. Five of the Top Eight seeded athletes were Texas Tech student athletes. In the same tournament, Miller teamed up with Lana Rush to clinch the doubles title.
In last weekend's summer circuit event at the McLeod Tennis Center, Bridgforth won four matches to clinch the title and earned the wild card spot in the September 25K event. She defeated future teammate Nell Miller in the final match. Three out of the four semifinalists were Lady Raider newcomers.
Former Lady Raider Gabriela Talaba has kicked off her professional career with a semifinal appearance at the Bethany Beach 25K (Delaware). She teamed up with Astra Sharma of Vanderbilt for the Baton Rogue 25K event and finished second in doubles action.
Talaba won the doubles title of the 25K event in Horb, Germany, with her Romanian teammate.
