LUBBOCK, Texas – Looking to build off a milestone season in 2017, the Texas Tech volleyball team held its first practice of the 2018 preseason Wednesday morning at United Supermarkets Arena in preparation for its upcoming campaign.
The start of fall practices signals 16 days from the Red Raiders' season debut, which will come at home with the Red Raider Classic August 24-25. The two-day tournament features Rice, North Dakota and Northwestern State. Tickets are available at www.TexasTech.com.
Tech will conduct two-a-days throughout preseason camp, which leads into the Red & Black scrimmage on August 18 at 6 p.m. inside United Supermarkets Arena.
Entering his third season at the helm, head coach Tony Graystone believes this year's unit has what it takes to make another big step forward in 2018 and he saw that on display on Wednesday.
"It was a really solid first workout," Graystone said. "This is a talented group and they showed it today. I can't wait to see how far they come along over the next couple of weeks, but this was a great starting point."
Five of seven starters return, including senior captains Missy Owens and Katy Keenan. Tech's top threats on the outside in juniors Emily Hill and Chandler Atwood also return, along with its leading blocker in sophomore Allison White.
Graystone's first complete signing class also enters the fold, consisting of eight freshmen. Tech will also receive the services of redshirt sophomore Maggie Sagers and redshirt freshman Andrea Janss, both of whom sat out last season with injuries.
