Texas Tech volleyball returns to California for Thunderdome Classic

LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech volleyball travels to the Golden State for the second straight weekend with three matches on tap at the Thunderdome Classic, held at UCSB's Thunderdome Friday-Saturday.
 
The Red Raiders (6-2) open the tournament at 8 p.m., CT, Friday against the Gauchos (4-3), before squaring off with Seton Hall (3-3) and Sacred Heart (4-2) Saturday at 12 p.m. and 6 p.m., CT.

LAST WEEK
Texas Tech split four matches in California last weekend, defeating UC Irvine and CSU Bakersfield and falling to Georgia and Long Beach State. Senior Missy Owens, who returned to her home state, and sophomore Allison White were named to the UCI/Adidas Invitational All-Tournament Team.
 
KNOWING THE OPPONENTS

  • UCSB (4-3) is 1-2 in five-set matches this season. The Gauchos returned all but one starter from a 2017 team that went 8-20. Texas Tech has been swept in all four previous meetings against UCSB, the last coming in 2004.
  • Seton Hall (3-3) is went 1-2 last weekend with straight-set losses to Pittsburgh and Oklahoma. The Pirates returned four starters from a 2017 squad that went 16-15. This will be the first meeting between the two programs.
  • Sacred Heart (4-2) has won three straight after falling at Boston College in four sets. The Pioneers went 12-15 last season. The Red Raiders won the only prior matchup, 3-0, in 2014.

  • Sophomore libero Emerson Solano ranks fourth in the Big 12 in digs per set
  • Junior Emily Hill ranks fourth in the Big 12 in total kills (88) and fifth in aces per set (0.41)

Texas Tech closes nonconference play next weekend at the UTRGV Tournament. The Red Raiders take on Houston Baptist, UTRGV and Texas Southern at the two-day event in Edinburg, Texas.
