Texas Tech volleyball heads south to close non-conference play

LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech volleyball travels to Edinburg, Texas, for its final tune up prior to Big 12 play as the Red Raiders compete in the four-team UTRGV Tournament Friday-Saturday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
After consecutive weekends in the Golden State, the tournament marks Tech's third straight week on the road and features three other Texas squads in Houston Baptist, UTRGV and Texas Southern.
The Red Raiders (8-3) open with a doubleheader Friday, facing off with Houston Baptist at 11 a.m., and UTRGV at 7 p.m. Tech closes out with Texas Southern at 10 a.m., Saturday.

  • Houston Baptist (6-5) already owns wins against UTRGV and Texas Southern this season. The Huskies have also taken sets over South Carolina, Houston and Rice. Megan Patillo is their top weapon, averaging 2.00 kills per set on .305 hitting with 0.97 blocks per set. Tech won the only prior matchup back in 2012.
  • UTRGV (7-4) earned their biggest win in program history last week, upsetting No. 15 Baylor in Waco. Tech has beaten the Vaqueros in Lubbock each of the last two seasons. Three of UTRGV's top four scorers played against Tech last season with redshirt freshman Pamela Moreira the exception.
  • Texas Southern (1-8) has been swept in six of its nine matches this season with its lone win coming in four sets against Southern University. Kirby Anderson leads the Lady Tigers with 1.96 kills per set on .163 hitting. This will be the first-ever meeting.


  • Tech is coming off a 2-1 showing at the Thunderdome Classic. The Red Raiders have played their last seven matches in California, going 4-3 during the stretch.
  • The trip to Edinburg is Tech's third straight week on the road.
  • Edinburg will be Tech's fifth different city to play in over its last 17 days.
  • This is Tech's first trip to Edinburg since 2014.


  • The trip is a homecoming for freshman Audrey Smith, who hails from Mission, Texas.
  • Texas Tech ranks 10th nationally in blocks per set, while senior Katy Keenan ranks 18thindividually.
  • Tech remains the Big 12 leader in opponent hitting percentage at .161.
  • Sophomore Allison White ranks ninth in the nation with a .449 hitting percentage.
  • Junior Emily Hill has led the Red Raiders in kills six times.

Following the UTRGV Tournament, Texas Tech opens Big 12 play at Baylor on Wednesday, Sept. 19. The match will conclude 12-straight matches away from Lubbock and lead into Tech's Big 12 home opener Saturday, Sept. 22 against West Virginia.
