Jarrett Culver earns Big 12 preseason honorable mention selection

LUBBOCK, Texas – Jarrett Culver has been named a Preseason All-Big 12 Honorable Mention selection after averaging 12.7 points and 5.1 rebounds per game in conference play as a freshman.

Culver, who also earned recognition on the 2019 Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year Watch List on Tuesday, averaged 11.2 points, 4.8 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.1 steals per game for the Red Raiders throughout his freshman season. He is the 12th Texas Tech preseason selection in program history. He recorded career-highs with 26 points and 12 rebounds at West Virginia and would score 25 against Oklahoma State, 20 at TCU and scored 18 against Kansas to highlight his first season. He led Texas Tech with 55 3-pointers with 31 of those coming in conference play at a 41.9 percentage.

Kansas State senior Dean Wade was named the Big 12 Preseason Player of the Year, while Kansas' Dedric Lawson was tabbed the Preseason Newcomer of the Year and Quentin Grimes the Preseason Freshman of the Year in votes coming by the league head coaches.
Joining Wade and Lawson on the Preseason All-Big 12 Team are Lindell Wigginton (Iowa State), Barry Brown, Jr. (K-State) and Sagaba Konate (West Virginia). Wade is the only 2017-18 All-Big 12 First Team selection returning to the Conference this season, while Brown was an All-Big 12 Second Team pick last year while Konate was selected to the third team and Wigginton was honorable mention.

A Lubbock native, Culver was second on the team with 177 rebounds, 41 steals and 27 blocks during last season's run to the NCAA Elite Eight. He earned Big 12 Newcomer of the Week on Nov. 27, 2017 after scoring 21 against Wofford and 18 against Savannah State and would also be named to the 2018 All-Big 12 Academic Rookie Team as a freshman.

The Big 12 preseason poll will be announced on Friday and the conference hosts its annual media day on Wednesday, October 24 at the Sprint Center in Kansas City. Texas Tech, which went 17-1 at home last season, is slated to open its 2018-19 season on Tuesday, Nov. 6 against Incarnate Word at the United Supermarkets Arena. The Red Raiders are coming off an historic season where they went 27-10 and advanced to the NCAA Elite 8 with wins over Stephen F. Austin, No. 23 Florida and No. 11 Purdue in the tournament.
