Texas Tech Director of Athletics spoke Wednesday about the search for a new head football coach on Double T 97-3 today during The Kirby Hocutt Show. Hocutt stayed mum on naming any particular names for candidates nor would he eliminate candidates during the program, but he did she some light on the coaching search and process. Hocutt did confirm that the contact and interviewing process is currently underway.
The leader of the athletics department mentioned some of the initial options have been eliminated at this point in the process, but said indicated he was pleased with what has taken place so far.
"I like where we are today," he said.
Hocutt stated there was no current time line on when a new leader of the football program would be named.
"It's fluid. There are a lot of conversations that are taking place. There's a lot of visits that are taking place," he said. "We'll just continue to manage those hour-by-hour and day-by-day."
The TTU AD was asked if all of the current candidates on his radar were current head coaches or offensive coordinators and he affirmed that they are. That probably eliminates rumors of Bob Stoops and Art Briles who do not fit that criteria.
Hocutt implied that he has several options on the table including a coordinator for a high-profile football program, but did not say that there is one front-runner for the job at the moment.
"You know when you get in a situation like this. You cannot put all of your eggs in one basket, the AD said. "As I've said, things can take various turns on you through the course of a process like this. So, we'll continue to keep different options going, and keep them on the table until we determine the best option for Texas Tech."
Hocutt reiterated that he wants the football program to reach the high levels some of the other sports have reached in recent history.
"We have not shied away from the fact that we want to be relevant, that we want to be elite, that we want to compete for championships. We're proving it in so many ways that it is possible - that it can be done at Texas Tech University. It can be done in Lubbock, Texas."
