Hocutt Discusses New Hire

Texas Tech Director of Athletics Kirby Hocutt was finally able to exhale a little on his weekly radio show on Double T 97-3 following a fast-paced football coaching search last week that ended in the hiring of Matt Wells.

Hocutt feels like he definitely made the right hire for the future of the Red Raider football program.

"I don't know if I'm feeling anything but extreme confidence that we found the right head coach and the right man to come in here and to elevate this program to a higher level than what we've been the last number of years," he said.

Hocutt believes his decision to hire Wells has been backed-up in the time recently spent around the new head coach.

"As I've had a chance to continue to watch Coach Wells interact with our student athletes, interact with our staff; his positive attitude, just how engaging of a leader that he is,"the TTU AD stated. "He's going to bring a level of leadership and accountability and consistency day-in and day-out to this program that's going to be exciting to watch."

The former Utah State head coach joined Hocutt and Senior Associate Athletics Director Robert Giovannetti on the Double T 97-3 radio show from the road while recruiting.

One thing that has stood out the most to Wells during his short time in Lubbock is the people of West Texas.

"It is Double T's everywhere. It kills me. It's awesome," the new coach said. "And to see these people and their hunger that they have to just have a winning football team."

Hocutt and Giovannetti also discussed the No. 13 national ranking Texas Tech basketball has garnered this week. They talked about the national perception and the rise of expectations since Chris Beard has taken over as head coach of TTU.

"When you watch what happened last weekend in Miami, and how we fought through adversity and came back to win that game," the AD said. "You think back to Kansas City and winning the games against USC and Nebraska, boy, we were the tougher team. And that's a trademark of his teams."
