LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech softball team began spring practice for the 2019 season Wednesday afternoon at Rocky Johnson Field. Head coach Adrian Gregory, who enters her fifth season at the helm, returns 12 members from last year's squad and welcomes nine newcomers.
"Today was very exciting and I'm so glad to have the team back and ready to go," Gregory said. "I just want to make sure that we're riding high in our confidence and that we keep the momentum we had in the fall. We have a lot of talent and, as you get more talent, people start pushing each other and everyone starts vying for a position."
Leading the charge into the 2019 season, All-American Jessica Hartwell returns for her senior season. Hartwell set a school record with 20 home runs in 2018 and is one of eight position starters returning from last year's squad. The Red Raiders also return their top pitcher from last season in sophomore Erin Edmoundson, who finished her freshman campaign 17-12 with a 2.97 ERA.
A trio of Division I transfers – Trenity Edwards (Missouri), Missy Zoch (DePaul) and Shelby Henderson (Louisiana-Lafayette) – as well as six talented freshmen, will don a Texas Tech uniform for the first time stepping into the Red Raiders' 2019 campaign.
Texas Tech is set to open up the season on Friday, Feb. 8, at the Lone Star Collegiate Classic in Conroe, Texas. The Red Raiders' 2019 schedule features 24 home games, including three-game series against Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas and Kentucky. Action at Rocky Johnson Field begins on March. 1 against UT Arlington at the Texas Tech Invitational.
