AUBURN, Ala. – Helping the Red Raiders to a 10-0 start, sophomore Erin Edmoundson tossed her second shutout of the weekend to lift the Texas Tech softball team to a 4-0 victory over the Drake Bulldogs, Sunday morning at Jane B. Moore Field.
Allowing just two hits, the southpaw picked up her second win against the Bulldogs, fanned nine hitters and allowed just one walk in the shutout.
Sophomore Heaven Burton led the Tech lineup with three of the Red Raiders' six hits and Trenity Edwards highlighted the crew with a three-run home run over the left-field wall.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams were held scoreless until Edmoundson sparked the Tech lineup in the top of the third. The lefty hitter reached second on an error in right field and Kelcy Leach moved her into prime scoring position on a grounder to third.
Lifting the Red Raiders to an early 1-0 lead, Burton laid down an RBI bunt and Edmoundson was able to cross home plate on the throw to first.
The two teams battled back-and-forth for the next two innings before Tech added to its lead in the top of the sixth.
A pair of bunts from Burton and Jessica Hartwell put two runners on base for the Red Raiders. On two outs, Edwards extended her RBI streak to five games on a three-run homer to put Tech up, 4-0.
Holding off the Bulldogs for the sixth straight inning, Edmoundson fanned senior All-American Nicole Newman for the sixth straight time over the course of the weekend to end the bottom of the sixth.
Burton and Karli Hamilton tacked on two more hits for the Red Raiders in the top of the seventh and Edmoundson closed out the game with back-to-back strikeouts to secure the 4-0 shutout over Drake.
