LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 15/14 Texas Tech softball team overcame an early 3-0 deficit and improved to 22-1 on the season with an 11-3, six-inning victory over Jacksonville State on day two of the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic, Saturday at Rocky Johnson Field.
Sophomore pitcher Erin Edmoundson tossed six full innings and fanned four hitters in her 12th win of the season. Trenity Edwards and Karli Hamilton led the offense with one home run each and Hamilton went a perfect 3-for-3 on the day with two runs scored.
The Red Raiders' victory marked the team's fifth consecutive run-rule and third game in a row to record 10 or more hits.
Tech threatened early in the bottom of the first after Hamilton came around all the way to third. However, the Red Raider offense couldn't bring her home.
Jacksonville State struck first and used a four-hit top of the second to take an early 3-0 lead.
Determined to stay in the fight, Tech clawed its way back and evened up the game with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Breanna Russell led Tech's efforts with a walk and Olga Zamarripa came in to run at first. Zoe Jones launched a single into center and heads-up base running allowed the pair to advance into scoring position.
Immediately after, Tech cut into the Gamecock's lead, 3-1, when Kelcy Leach hit a laser that bounced off the Jacksonville State third baseman and Zamarripa came sliding home. Freshman Yvonne Whaley produced a textbook bunt that brought in pinch runner Peyton Blythe from third and an RBI single from Hamilton tied up the game at three runs apiece.
Edmoundson and the Red Raiders kept the Gamecocks off the board in the top of the fourth and the Red Raiders made a statement in the bottom of the inning with a four-run effort. Whaley kicked things off with a double that went streaking past the Jacksonville State left fielder.
Switching the momentum, Hamilton drilled an RBI triple down the right-field line to give Tech a 4-3 lead and Edwards launched her eighth home run of the season – a three-run shot – over the left-field wall to give Tech a commanding, 7-3 lead.
Hamilton picked up her third hit of the day and furthered the Red Raiders' lead to 8-3 on a solo home run off Jacksonville State reliever Nicole Rodriguez. Jessica Hartwell was hit for the third consecutive time and she safely reached second on a steal. Edwards moved Hartwell over to third on a rocket shot off the pitcher's shin and Hartwell crossed the plate for Tech's ninth run of the day after Satchell drew a throw from home plate on a steal to second.
Powering Tech to its fifth consecutive run rule, Leach ended the ball game on a two-RBI double to left-center field as the Red Raiders moved past Jacksonville State, 11-3.
