Red Raiders Fifth After Big 12 Championship Opening Rounds
The Red Raiders will be paired with Baylor on Sunday with Hogan beginning the final round at 7 a.m.
WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.V. – Texas Tech junior Sandy Scott is in eighth place at the Big 12 Conference Championship after shooting 1-under-par through two rounds and the Red Raiders are fifth with a 284-282 – 566 (6-over) total on Saturday at The Greenbrier.
The Red Raiders will begin the third and final round of the championship starting at 7 a.m. (CST) on Sunday. Oklahoma State leads the tournament at 14-under (278-268 – 546), while TCU (6-under) is in second and Oklahoma and Texas are tied for third at 2-under. The tournament, which was originally scheduled for 72 holes, was modified to a 54-hole championship after Friday's round was rained out with two rounds on Saturday before Sunday's final round.
Individually, Oklahoma State's Viktor Hovland and TCU's Hayden Springer are tied for the lead at 8-under.
Texas Tech freshman Jansen Smith shot even-par at 70-70 – 140 and is in 15th for a solid start to his first conference tournament. Scott, who goes into Sunday with a 69-70 – 139 scorecard and is tied with seven other players at 1-under, was in seventh overall after the opening round where he shot 1-under-par with three birdies and 13 pars on his scorecard. He made two of his birdies on par 4s and also birdied the 570-yard 12th hole in the morning round before shooting par on his second round of the day with three more birdies and 12 pars. Smith was tied for 10th at even-par in his first round with an eagle, two birdies and 12 pars in his first round and then shot par for the second straight round after making three birdies, 12 pars and three bogeys during the afternoon round.
Ivan Ramirez is in 28th place after shooting 71-73 – 144 during the first day, while Adam Blomme will go into the final round in 33rd after posting 76-69 – 145. Ramirez finished the first day with five birdies, while Blomme also had five with three coming on the back-9 of his final round. Blomme's second round of 1-under had him with three birdies, two bogeys and 13 pars. He would birdie 14, 15 and 17 to record the round of 1-under. Kyle Hogan shot 74-77 – 151 and is in 45th after 36 holes in the conference tournament.
Texas Tech was in sixth on the team leaderboard after the opening round where the Red Raiders shot 4-over (284) to start the tournament. TCU led the field at 7-under, while Oklahoma State was second at 2-under followed by Iowa State and Texas which were both at 1-over in their opening 18. TCU's Hayden Springer was leading the tournament after posting a round of 64 (6-under) and Texas' Pierceson Coody was in second at 3-under going into the second round. Coody shot a 69 in his second round and is in fourth at 4-under, while TCU's David Ravetto shot 68-67 – 135 and is in third going into the final round.
The Red Raiders will be paired with Baylor on Sunday with Hogan beginning the final round at 7 a.m. followed by Blomme (7:09), Ramirez (7:18), Smith (7:27) and Scott (7:36) at the par-70 course that is being played at 7,201 yards this weekend for the conference title.
The All-Tournament team, consisting of the final top 10 golfers will be honored at the awards ceremony immediately following the event.
