Wilson developed into a key piece of the Texas Tech defense in his second year as a Red Raider in 2021, setting the tone as the team leader for both tackles for loss and sacks a year ago. He finished with 38 tackles on the season (26 solo), with 13.5 for a loss and 7.0 sacks marking easily the most productive season of his collegiate career thus far. He was named an honorable mention All-Big 12 selection by the conference coaches at the conclusion of the regular season and went on to earn the Defensive MVP of the AutoZone Liberty Bowl and was recognized on the Associated Press All-Bowl Team for his performance in the Red Raiders' bowl game versus Mississippi State.
The senior looks to build on his mammoth junior season with an even more dominant senior season shifting to more of a role as a standup pass rusher on the end under first-year head coach Joey McGuire and first-year defensive coordinator Tim DeRuyter. DeRuyter has led a few of the more major menaces to the quarterback in recent history, including Kayvon Thibodeaux (Oregon) last season who was a Bednarik Award finalist and first-round NFL draft pick.
The Bednarik Award watch list incorporated a broad spectrum of Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) programs and conferences from coast to coast, the full list consists of 90 players.
